Tories push through hospital plans
We have been fighting to protect our Hospital services since the creation of the Tory STPs back in 2016. The Tories have ignored the wishes of local people and decided to go ahead with their plans for Mid and South Essex STP.
In November last year, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council referred the Mid and South Essex Sustainability and Transformation Partner’s public consultation and resulting decisions to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock. You can read the full letter they sent here: https://southend.moderngov.co.uk/documents/s28425/Appendix%201%20Referral%20Letter%20to%20Secretary%20of%20State.pdf
Mr Hancock has now written to the council to confirm that, following advice from the Independent Reconfiguration Panel, the proposed reforms will proceed unchanged.
Thanks to the success of the Save Southend A&E Campaign last year that I supported the plans to downgrade Southend A&E in favour of creating a specialist trauma centre at Basildon Hospital have been dropped but there remain serious concerns about the plans and the impact they could have on services, especially stroke services at Southend.
It is unacceptable for the Secretary of State to simply dismiss out of hand the very real and valid concerns people in this community have raised over the future of their local hospital services. The decision to downgrade Southend A&E has, rightly, been scrapped, but local people are still opposed to the plan to move stroke services to Basildon Hospital. Equally, the Secretary of State’s view that consultation here in Southend was adequate is disingenuous in the face of the overwhelming concern and frustration expressed by local people.
The protests last year over the future shape of local health services, in which thousands of people took part, demonstrate ordinary people’s strength of feeling about these controversial plans. They must not be ignored.
I have set up a petition asking the Secretary of State to reconsider his decision, and I will continue in my full-throated support of the campaign to protect our local hospital.
I will continue to fight with the Save Southend NHS campaign and local people to protect the services we hold dear.
